What is Activated Charcoal?
Activated charcoal is pure carbon comprised of millions of tiny micropores which have a large surface area. Just one gram of activated carbon has a surface area in excess of 2,000 m2. This high degree of microporosity makes it extremely effective in binding to vast amounts of organic material, trapping toxins and preventing your body from absorbing them.Used for thousands of years for its adsorbing (bonding)properties, it is still the most widely used drawing substance available today. This is why charcoal is found in water filters and used to treat acute poisoning in hospitals around the world as an emergency decontaminant.
HOW IS ACTIVATED CHARCOAL POWDER MADE?
Charcoal is produced by slow combustion in the relative absence of oxygen.Burnt toast and charcoal briquettes are NOT charcoal. Treatment with super heated steam produces “activated” charcoal which is capable of a much greater adsorptive effect. This is because more surfaces of the charcoal have been exposed.
The rotary kiln is a large, slow-rotating cylindrical tube lined with fireclay bricks. The kiln is 20 meters long and 2.4 meters in diameter.
Raw material is continuously fed from a hopper into the rotary kiln which steadily turns the carbonized material inside. As a blower forces air into the kiln, the charcoal reacts with hot steam causing the internal temperature to rise to 900-1100ºC.
The material is activated by hot steam as it moves slowly downwards. The reaction between the steam and charcoal creates pores in the internal surface area, creating more adsorptive spaces. Depending on the temperature and amount of oxygen, this process takes 25-40 minutes.
The activated carbon passes through a screw conveyor with a cooling jacket, reducing the carbon to 200ºC before it reaches the discharging pipe and drops into a cooling kiln. where it is chilled to room temperature, 30-40ºC for several minutes before being fed into a sizing machine, sorted and packed into bulk bags for storage.
HOW DOES ACTIVATED CHARCOAL POWDER WORK?
Activated charcoal works by undergoing a process known as "adsorption".This is when a solid, or molecule of a gas or liquid adheres or binds to the charcoal atom instead of being filtered into it (ie.absorption). Activated charcoals negatively charged, porous texture attracts and bonds to positively charged impurities like a magnet to remove them safely.
Activated charcoal is said to adsorb foreign materials rather than absorb them. Sponges absorb liquids but do not bind them, and therefore they can be squeezed right out. On the flip side, substances like charcoal that adsorb, actually bind the toxins so they cannot escape. When toxins and other impurities interact with charcoal, they are bound tightly at a molecular level and cannot be reabsorbed by the body.
Internally, charcoal cannot adsorb all poisons, but it can bind with, and thus neutralise many of them. Here are but a few of the many things it adsorbs:
- Many industrial toxins including DDT and dieldrin, strychnine, malathion, parathion
- Many medical drugs including aspirin, barbiturates cocaine, opium, nicotine, morphine, penicillin and sulphas.
- Many inorganic chemicals including mercury, phosphorous, chlorine, lead and iron.
But it won’t adsorb everything, activated charcoal isn’t effective in bonding to:
- Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid), strong acids and bases, metals and inorganic minerals such as sodium, iron, lead, arsenic, iodine, fluorine, and boric acid
- Alcohol (such as ethanol, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, glycols, and acetone)
- Hydrocarbons (such as petroleum distillates and plant hydrocarbons such as pine oil)
WHAT IS ACTIVATED CHARCOAL USED FOR?
A single teaspoon of activated charcoal has a surface area of approximately 10000 square feet. It adsorbs (binds to and helps eliminate from the body) poisons, heavy metals, chemicals and intestinal gases that have thousands of times more weight than it has, making it very effective in detoxing and eliminating toxins and poisonous substances from the body. It is also able to adsorb many different pharmaceutical drugs, opium, cocaine, morphine, pesticides (among them DDT), chemicals, mercury and even lead.
Activated charcoal can be used to treat skin ailments, diarrhea, bad breath, constipation and body odor. It can be used as a poultice to treat insect stings, mushroom poisoning, poison ivy, cholera, dysentery, bites and inflammation. It can also be used to treat snake bites in an emergency. Babies born with jaundice have been known to be treated with activated charcoal as well.
It is often used as an ingredient in body detox products and colon cleansers.
Studies have shown that activated charcoal even has anti-aging properties. It helps improve liver, adrenal gland and kidney functions with regular use. Those suffering from digestive ailments such as indigestion, bloating or gas can benefit from activated charcoal because the charcoal enters the digestive tract and adsorbs excess gas, which maybe present there. It also improves the functioning of the liver, heart and brain and helps to decrease cholesterol levels and the risk of coronary artery disease.
When using activated charcoal, it is best to take it between meals and afew hours after using any vitamin or mineral supplements, as it may interfere with the absorption of these into the body. It must also be stored in a properly sealed container away from heat and moisture.
Activated charcoal has been shown to catch and hold more than 100 times its own weight in outside materials. The inner surface is between 300 and 2000 m2/g powder depending on mesh size. This translates to mean that 2 grams of the finest activated charcoal corresponds roughly to the area of a football field. This property makes activated charcoal a powerful resource to seize and eliminate toxins from the air, water and from within the human body when used correctly.
Activated charcoal is good at trapping other carbon-based impurities ("organic"chemicals) that are commonly found in pesticides, herbicides, plastics, and other industry and environmental pollutants.
It is estimated that daily use of activated charcoal reduces the toxic load in the human body by over 60%. The activated carbon itself is not absorbed in the gut but is eliminated in the feces.
Activated charcoal is very mild on the colon and does not interfere with the natural mucus lining of the intestines. It is wonderful for cleansing the intestines. It is great at binding to toxic gases, Candida, parasites and other physical impurities and at rendering them harmless. Bloating, flatulence and constipation are relieved.
Top Uses for Activated Charcoal Powder
The simple, yet powerful properties of activated charcoal has many uses. We've compiled a list of the top few:
Ingestion of Poison
One of the most common uses for activated charcoal is for the safe and effective treatment of poisoning and drug overdoses. It's actually used in emergency departments around the world for this purpose.
Gas / Bloat
Feeling bloated or have too much gas? Taking a teaspoon of charcoal powder in a glass of water will go a long way to alleviating those symptoms and may get rid of them altogether.
Whitens Teeth
Are your teeth stained from cigarettes, tea or some other substance? Brushing your teeth with charcoal powder helps clean and whiten them. It can also help prevent bad breath and gum disease.
Simply wet your toothbrush, dip it in charcoal powder and brush your teeth as normal. Be careful not to spill charcoal on fabrics as it can stain. It’s not pretty while you’re brushing, but afterwards you’ll be glad you tried it!
Poultice or Compress
Activated charcoal powder can be mixed with ground linseed and water, then slowly brought to a boil and left to cool in order to form a paste. It can be used for skin irritations, infections, acne, sore joints, stings and bites. Apply to the affected area and cover with a clean cloth for several hours or overnight. Alternately, moisten a small amount of charcoal and apply to bites or the like with a band-aid.
General Tonic / Detox
Some recommend taking a teaspoon of charcoal powder in a glass of water as a general detox. The charcoal do its work of adsorption while it travels through your intestinal system.
Be prepared to see black stools as it passes through. ;)
Water Filtration
Charcoal is often used to filter water, and remove toxic substances. It is effectively used all over the world for this. It is worth noting that it will not trap viruses, which should be neutralised through heat, evaporation or ultra-violet methods.
Water is important for health. Drink at least 8 glasses per day. A charcoal filter can help remove chloride/fluoride and other toxins/chemicals in your tap-water.
